Wine racks come in a bewildering array of styles, shapes and materials but they all serve the same purpose - to properly store your collection of wine bottles. No wine enthusiast or collector should be without one (or two). Here are some of the more common styles of wine racks available:

Hanging wine racks are typically made of wrought iron and are often beautiful 3-dimensional works of art in their own right. The wine rack is hung from the ceiling by a chain, and typically hold 3-6 wine bottles.

:: Wall-Mounted Wine Racks

Wall-mounted wine wine are also made of wrought iron and are works of art designed to enhance a kitchen or dining room area. These wine rack are fastened to a wall and typically hold 3-6 wine bottles.

:: Kitchen Counter Wine Racks

Kitchen counter or tabletop wine racks are often made of steel or wrought iron and are works of art. These wine racks are generally small to save space and hold from 1 to 6 wine bottles.

:: Metal Wine Jail Racks

Also called wine jails, these are free-standing wine racks made of wrought-iron that feature a single or double swinging doors in the front that are locked with a key. Wine jail racks can be fairly large and typically hold 40 or more wine bottles.

:: Wood Stackable Wine Racks

Modular wine racks are often made of solid wood and are designed to be stackable - you simply buy another rack as your wine collection grows and stack it on or next to the previous rack. This system can be used to store quite a few bottles.

:: Table or Pedestal Wine Rack

This falls under the style of wine rack furniture and is often designed to be a small table or pedestal. The wine bottles are stored under the table top between the legs. These wine racks are made of either metal or wood and typically hold 12-24 wine bottles. Often a wine glass rack is added directly underneath the table top.

This style of wine rack is often custom-made to fit a particular wall and go from floor to ceiling. Wall wine racks are made of solid wood and can house a lot of wine bottles.

One variation, a wine library, features a wood backing against the wall, giving the effect of a large wall-to-wall bookcase. Wine bottles are typically stored upright, unlike with all other wine rack styles.
